cheap looking October 6, 2008 S. Ridge (Houston,tx) bought this as a gift and was too embarassed to give it to him so we sold it for $10 at a garage sale.
Not what I expected January 23, 2008 DJ (Grand Junction, CO United States) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I recently snapped this up during the "gold box" offering. I figured it was a relatively small amount of money and a little research revealed two upgrade coils available here on Amazon that are supposed to fit all Bounty Hunter models.
Well, long story short; It arrived today and besides the expected "inexpensive" quality which is very obvious, I also noticed there was no simple way to remove the existing coil. It looked to me to be hardwired into the control module.
A quick call to the main distributor for BH revealed that the upgrade coils claim to be usable on "all" BH models is not accurate and only pertains to those units with a "quick connect" feature which this low end model does not have.
I will leave the debate on whether this is a good value or not to those with more knowledge and experience with this type of equipment.
What I will say is this is nothing more than a childs' toy and I am going to have to spend a bit more to take a legitimate step into this interesting hobby.
Great service by Amazon all the way around though. It seems like lately they've really upped the CS a notch and I like it.
Best to Avoid This One February 24, 2008 Kitty Jones (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The amazon advertising used for this product is misleading, there was no place to plug in headphones and expecting that this will find metal 24" below the surface is a pipe dream. We tried to do this in thin air and it wouldnt even do that. The term "Professional" used in its name is hardly a word I would use to describe this product. The product is best used as a toy at the beach, if that fits your need then it would probably work quite well for your 8-10 year old.
In all fairness, after complaining about the misleading advertising to Amazon, they offered to take it back and refund my return shipping, but for the price paid, it wasnt worth one more second of aggravation. It now is perfectly happy residing in a back closet where it will remain until our next garage sale.
Just received...New Update 02/18/08. - No Stars... January 24, 2008 David Burrell (Nevada) 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
I received this today, but I have not used it yet, because it needs two nine volt batteries, but thought I'd start a "customer's review" and add an update once the snow is off the ground here in Reno, Nevada.
My first impression was of a Stars Wars children toy when I opened the shipping carton.
This item is made entirely of back plastic, and looks to have been manufactured in India or China. I don't know really because the "Country of Origin" was not on the carton it came in, nor on the instructions, or the invoice.
I finally tried out this toy today. I dug down two feet into the still semi-frozen soil, and already having a 1/4" thick by 2" wide by 6" long steel plate, I buried it at the two feet mark.
Absolutely nothing was detected at 2 feet. So, I moved it up to one foot deep...nothing. It was not until the steel plate was about 6" under the clean dirt that the detector finally picked up an indication that anything was there.
This toy might work for finding nails or screws embedded on or near the surface of a dirt or gravel driveway, if you are careful and slow, but I personally wouldn't try to use it for anything deeper.
Back to Amazon it goes.
Product description wrong and cheaply made January 25, 2008 Woody1 (Cincinnati, OH) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was disappointed in this product for a couple of reason. First the description is incorrect. There is no headphone jack for private listening. The coil, which must swivel for adjustment, is all plastic without any washers to prevent wear. The arm support is hard plastic and is somewhat uncomfortable. The whole item looks like something you would get from inside a cereal box. For $50 as a Gold Box item it was still over-priced.
The operation of the unit is even less impressive. It could not find a penny 2 inches below the surface of a potted plant (in a plastic pot). I always wanted this more for finding the roofing nails in my yard after the roofers tossed shingles and nails to the ground last summer than anything else, but other than a novelty toy for some kid, I don't see myself hanging on to this one. Sorry Amazon.
